May 7, 1854

A self-ordained Protestant preacher named John Orr, he leads a mob from Chelsea that attacks the homes of Catholics and St. Nicholas Church in East Boston. Described by Edward Savage as “[A] poor, illiterate, half-breed Scotchman with more impudence than brains,” Orr incites more disturbances in Boston in June and July, is arrested and fined in August, and disappears soon after.
